At this stage of my testing, the results I have confidence in concern the initial sharpness produced by different honing abrasives and the edge retention for planing cherry using a bevel angle of 34º.

I’ve done some preliminary tests comparing the effects of bevel angle on sharpness and edge retention, and believe that blades may perform better at more acute angles. This is limited by the ability of the blade in question to hold an edge without deformation or chipping, which varies considerably among the alloys. These test results can be seen on the page below.
